In a Kadiyal saree the border and body are woven in contrasting colours and interlocked at the join — the two wefts loop into each other wherever the colour changes. Nothing is stitched or printed, so the reverse shows the same crisp boundary as the front and there are no loose floats behind the motif. It is the technique that separates a woven Paithani from an imitation.
Kadiyal vs semi-Kadiyal
- Kadiyal — a full interlocked join along the border, usually in strongly contrasting colours (for example green body with a pink border).
- Semi-Kadiyal — a lighter treatment of the same idea, often at a more accessible price. See the Semi Kadiyal Paithani saree.
Styles in this edit
- Raksha Kadiyal Paithani — classic contrast border with a Paithani pallu.
- Ambika Checks Kadiyal — the interlocked border on an all-over checked body.
- Kadiyal Border soft silk — peacock and floral zari pallu.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Kadiyal mean?
Kadiyal refers to the interlocking weave where border and body in different colours are joined in the thread itself, so the colour change is clean on both sides.
Which state is the Kadiyal saree from?
The technique is central to Paithani weaving in Maharashtra and to Gadwal sarees from Telangana, where it is also called kupadam.
How can I check a saree is truly Kadiyal?
Turn it over at the border. A true Kadiyal join looks the same on the reverse, with no floating threads.
